Prayer Before Everything Else

Matthew 6:33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

We make all sorts of mistakes, blunders and commit sins when we do not seek the Lord first.

Joshua 9:14: And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

In Joshua 9 some nearby neighbours deceived Joshua and the Israelites into believing that they were from a long way off and that they were not among those God had commanded them to destroy. Someone wise has said that People who will not be governed by God will be governed by a tyrant. We can also say that if we do not seek God*s will first we will find the will of a tyrant. Sometimes the tyrant might even be ourselves. If we do not get in touch with God first, we will often get in touch with a tyrant. No one can lead us aright like God can.

John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Judges 7:22: And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man*s sword against his fellow.

Some time ago, somebody sent me a beautiful motto which reads, *Do something: lead, follow, or get out of the way!* It is surprising what a small amount of doing can solve. It is possible, my friend, to become a Christian activist. The radicals of our day have stolen the word and smeared it. But activist is a good word, meaning *to do something wholesome and constructive about a situation.*

There is always something you can do. Let me illustrate: In Judges 7:21, we find Gideon with just 300 men in his army. Thirty thousand had been sent home: twenty thousand were scared and the other ten thousand were careless.

Nonetheless, the Bible says of those who remained, *They stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the [enemy] host ran, and cried, and fled.* Yes, there*s no substitute for personal responsibility. Each of us has his job to perform. And we can perform it best if we have learned the secret of trusting God actively throughout the day.

Greet your Lord in the morning. Pray before you have breakfast. Pray before you tackle your first task of the day—whether in the home, office, or schoolroom. Pray before you open a letter or answer the phone: it may be good news or it may be a bitter message from someone bent on doing you harm.

Small thought here, Yes, dear friend: do something! Pray. Become a Christian activist by praying first and then following through on what our blessed Lord says to you. Such a lifestyle allows God to work through you to accomplish glorious things for Him!
